Subject: Formal Notice – MetroWest Board Action Regarding MFBO Participation
Good day, Metro West Member
At a recent meeting of the MetroWest Building Officials Association Board of Directors, the Board considered a motion regarding the Association’s participation in the Massachusetts Federation of Building Officials (MFBO). After discussion, the Board voted to suspend MetroWest’s participation in the Federation for a defined two-year “cool-down” period, effective immediately.
This action follows ongoing discussions between MetroWest and the Federation regarding the equitable sharing of Federation expenses among the participating associations. MetroWest has maintained that financial contributions should be allocated proportionally based on each association’s membership. As MetroWest represents approximately 19% of the statewide membership, the Board did not believe it was equitable to divide Federation expenses evenly among the associations. Consistent with that position, MetroWest submitted a payment reflecting its proportional share. While that payment was deposited by the Federation, the proportional contribution was not accepted as satisfying the Federation’s funding request, and MetroWest’s voting rights were subsequently suspended. In light of these circumstances, the MetroWest Board determined that temporarily suspending participation would allow time for the issue to settle and for the Association to reassess its relationship with the Federation at a later date.
The purpose of this temporary pause is to allow the Board to evaluate several ongoing concerns relating to the governance structure of the Federation, voting authority among the regional associations, and the overall relationship between MetroWest and the Federation. The Board determined that stepping back from participation for a period of time would provide an opportunity to reassess whether continued involvement best serves the interests of the MetroWest membership.
As part of this action, MetroWest representatives will step down from all MFBO Board positions, and MetroWest will not maintain representation on the Federation Board during this review period.
It is important to note that this decision does not affect the operations or activities of the MetroWest Building Officials Association. Our regular meetings, educational programs, professional collaboration, and regional support for building officials will continue as they always have.
At the conclusion of the two-year period, the MetroWest Board of Directors will re-evaluate the relationship with the Federation and determine whether reinstatement of participation is in the best interest of the Association.
The Board appreciates the continued support and participation of our members. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Robert Berger.
